Diego’s Senior Session: Tucson Desert & Early Booking Advantages

When Diego’s mom contacted me to schedule her youngest son’s senior session, she shared that Diego had a very unique idea he wanted to incorporate. And even though sometimes I feel like I’ve seen it all, I was genuinely surprised by what he brought to the shoot.

We had worked together before—I photographed one of her older sons—so it was extra special to be part of this new milestone for their family.

Diego was graduating from Sunnyside High School, and he already had a clear vision for his session: desert views, mountains, and that signature golden Tucson light. Gates Pass Photography was the perfect fit.

We scheduled his Senior Session in Tucson in November, and that decision turned out to be a game-changer for several reasons. If you're planning a senior session (or any outdoor shoot, really), here are a few things to keep in mind—just like we did with Diego:

1. Early planning means prime locations all to yourself

Gates Pass is one of the most popular spots in Tucson, especially for desert lovers. As spring approaches, the area gets more and more crowded with tourists, families, couples, and other seniors taking photos. Parking becomes limited, and you often have to wait for a good spot. Because we planned ahead, we had the place nearly to ourselves—and that made all the difference. Diego was able to take his time and bring to life the vision he had for his photos.

2. Flexibility with weather

The desert weather in February, March, and April is unpredictable. You can start the day with sunshine and end it in heavy wind or sudden rain. I've had to reschedule several sessions recently because of strong gusts. Wind can make a shoot almost impossible—hair everywhere, dust in your eyes, not exactly what you're hoping for in your senior portraits. When you book early, you have more room to reschedule if needed. In Diego’s case, the weather was perfect, but had anything gone wrong, we would’ve had the chance to move the session without stress.

3. Less crowd, more magic

The more people show up at these popular photo spots in Tucson, the harder it becomes to create a calm, focused session. You end up sharing the same background with other photographers, families with dogs, couples getting engaged, and of course, other seniors. By choosing an earlier date in the season, we were able to avoid the chaos and keep the session intimate and relaxed.

Diego also brought a special prop—a rope used for roping horses—that added a unique touch to his desert-themed senior session. Combined with the open space, the mountain backdrop, and the warm tones of sunset, the photos came out stunning.

Planning your Senior Session in Tucson doesn’t have to be stressful. If you have a vision, let’s talk early and make sure we bring it to life—with plenty of time, space, and beauty to make it unforgettable.
